Adult Bible Study Groups

The mission of Adult Spiritual Formation Commission is to foster spiritual and personal growth through Christian study and fellowship.  We believe that Small Groups are a wonderful way to do this!  Our offerings cover a variety of topics and formats.  We welcome and encourage your participation. Please take a look at our Bible study group offerings below.

Women’s Monday Night Bible Study
The gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke are the focus of this study. We are using a text that has these 3 Gospels printed side by side.   The group is asked to read the text carefully, take time to reflect, and participate in conversation; questioning, challenging, and discovering insights so that these ancient texts come alive. This group meets monthly from 7:00 – 8:30 PM. Please contact Ginger Goodrich for more information: vpgood@aol.com

Explorers Bible Study
This is a small group that meets on Wednesdays in Haas Hall at 11:00AM following the mid week Holy Communion service. Our gatherings take place from mid September through mid May and the group numbers eight to ten people. The format usually consists of in-class reading of one of the Bible book commentaries written by William Barclay. (No homework). We have found his books to be most helpful in understanding the New Testament message as it relates to the lives of current day Christians. Open and informal discussions are inevitable, interesting and fun.  At the present time the group is studying the Paul’s Letters to the Corinthians .  Originally started by The. Rev. Stanley Johnson, Explorers Bible Study has been an ongoing program for more than ten years. (It seems to be one of the best kept secrets at St. Thomas) Come join us; all are welcome. For more information feel free to call Frank Conly, (215) 855-6565 or email at: fconly@verizon.net

Thursday Morning Bible Study
This approach to Scripture is through conversation and discovery.  After a careful reading of a passage, the ancient texts come alive through the shared insights that emerge.  The focus this year will be on some of the great figures of Hebrew Scripture, reading their stories, and exploring their connections to the teachings and ministry of Jesus.  Facilitator:  Ginger Goodrich, contact at vpgood@aol.com , Thursday mornings from 10:00 – 11:30 a.m. in the Parish House Living Room.

Friday Morning Bible Study
We will focus on the life of Jesus, using a book by H.B. Sharmon that sets the Gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke side by side for easy comparison.  We will read the text together, as if for the first time, to see what the Gospels are saying to us.  No previous Bible experience is assumed or required and there’s no homework!  Facilitator:  Sarah Elliott, contact at ss.elliott@comcast.net , Friday mornings 9:30 – 11:00 a.m. in the Resource Room.
